Writing is not just penmanship.

Writing is not just penmanship.

Writing is about:

- having a rich vocabulary

- engaging in experiences

- having imaginative ideas

- organising thoughts

- engaging an audience

- giving information

-communication

- storytelling

Parents, even teachers, of very young children focus on handwriting.

Hold your pencil this way.
Colour that worksheet this way.
Draw this big.
Use the lines.
Do it over and over.
Until children are fed up and unmotivated.
Until children are no longer interested in writing.

What if..
- we make them fall in love with stories?
- what if we engage them in experiences so that they have unique stories to tell?
- what if we expose them to a plethora of words that will equip them to communicate effectively
- what if we focus away of penmanship and writing in worksheets and instead, invite them to a literature-rich environment that will build their foundation on excellent comprehension and language skills? Which later on will help their writing skills anyway!
- what if they don’t love physical writing but they love creating and making up stories and giving you silly messages?

What if we just follow the children?
